About Mekićevica

Mekicevica (actually Mekićevica with an accent over the first c) is the Manta 19 nr. 1176, made in 1978 in Hoylake (near Liverpool). She is a fibreglass little cruiser, with mast-top, bermudan sloop rig. Below the waterline she has a ballast keel and a retractable centre-plate plus two (non-ballasted) bilge keels. With the centre-plate up she draws a mere 1/2 meter and can fall dry standing on her own legs.
Down below there is enough room for two people who like to keep things simple. A place to sleep, a roof above our heads for when it rains, space for the gear and food, even a toilet. Why would you need anything else in a boat?
We found her in the Norfolk broads where she was known as Emily. We brought her on her trailer and gave her a major refit.
Since the summer of 2011 Mekicevica has been cruising around the the Netherlands with Bruinisse as base, Yeserke most southern point so far, and Terscheling as most northern point.

Mekicevica's Crew
Luis (Skipper) was born in Lisbon but has spent more than half of his life outside Portugal.
Sandra (First Mate) was born in Belgrade but has also lived more than half of her life somewhere else.
Currently we live in Belgium.
We started to sail so we can continue to enjoy life outdoors when we are no longer able to ski, and climb.

The Name
Everybody that sees Mekicevica says something like:
"Nice little boat. What does the name mean?"
Mekićevica is a bay on the island of Hvar (Croatia) where Sandra has some of her roots.
In one of the happiest moments of our sailing lives, in June 2012 Mekićevica sailed into the eponymous bay during a cruise from Trogir to Mljet and back.
